Dhawan made his debut in October 2010 in Vishakhapatnam against Australia. During his tenure, Dhawan played 34 Tests, 167 ODIs, and 68 T20Is, amassing 2,315, 6,793, and 1,579 runs respectively across the three formats. He had a successful career span of over a decade which includes his remarkable achievements like scoring 24 centuries with 17 in ODIs and 7 in T20s.

Dhawan made his final appearance for India in an ODI against Bangladesh at Chattogram in December 2022. He played his last Test match in 2018 against England while his last T20I was played in Sri Lanka in July 2021.
